Irish Film Institute

This art-house film institute is a hip hangout for cinephiles in Dublin's artsy Temple Bar district. Refurbished in 2009, it houses three cinemas, the Irish Film Archive, a library, a small but comprehensive bookshop, and a cafe that makes a good place for a cup of coffee on a cold afternoon. There's also a busy bar that does banner business. The cinemas show arty, groundbreaking films and are the main attraction here, bar or no bar. Usually about half the films on offer aren't on general release in Ireland, which means you have to become a member before you can buy tickets; but this isn't difficult and costs from €1. The IFI isn't just a place for hip young things; "Wild Strawberries" is the IFI's excellent seniors club, which is open to all. You can see a movie for €4, including tea and coffee. It usually runs on the last Wednesday and Friday of every month at 11am; call the box office for details.
