Ireland's best food market dates from a charter of King James I in 1610. The present building, finished in 1788, was damaged by fires in 1980 and 1986 and then brilliantly refurbished. Inside food stands brim with meats, fish, vegetables, and fruit, and you'll also find such traditional Cork delights as hot buttered eggs, tripe (animal stomach), crubeens (pigs' feet), and drisheens (local blood sausage). For the less adventurous, there are plenty of stands at which you can get coffee, fresh snacks, or lunch on the go; head to the Joup stand for hot soups made from local produce, or the prosaically named Salad and Sandwich Bar for good picnic supplies.
